Digital Citizenship

We watched a Cyberbullying video on Infinite Learning Lab. Students then completed post it stickers on what they learnt from Garfield. We also spoke about the do's, don't and consequences for using devices in the classroom.

Literacy Sessions

Welcome to our Literacy block. This is what it looks like.

SRA Reading Laboratory programs work by colour-coding portions of reading materials according to the reading ability level required. It emphasizes the role of the student in directing his own learning, assessing his own skills as he works his way up through the levels. The age range runs from 5 years reading age to 13 years reading age.

Daily handwriting activities.
Students completing their tasks on Reading Eggs.
V.J. and Carl displaying on task behaviour.
Students complete S.R.A. (Science Research Associates) cards independently.

Spelling List - Each child chooses a list at their level. They learn how to spell the word, find dictionary meanings, synonyms, antonyms and writes sentences using the word. It is part of their weekly homework.
After Mrs Rassool completed the class reading assessments, she found that inference was their weakness. Students work through these inference sheets independently.
These are the activities that students choose to do during our literacy sessions.

Talk to Learn Programme

Ms Murray works with her group daily from 9am to 11am. They work on the Talk to Learn Programme. They just completed a topic themed 'Me." Now the topic that they are studying is 'Fish'. Students are really engaged and they have loads of fun.

They do a 5 minutes greeting and poem, followed by a daily naming activity. Then they do a listening activity, assemble a person and colour their picture. A story is shared, they then play a barrier game. They then sequence pictures and paste the pictures in sequence.

Here are some photos of Ms Murray taking her Talk to Learn group.

Our Chant

Our Chant

Fiery Taniwhas that’s our name
We sing and shout our unique name
We creep in the deep blue sea
We hide in the shadows you don’t see me
We are there you just don’t know it yet

Cause we are the fiery, the Fiery Taniwhas

The Lockdown

I was simply minding my own business doing my SRA card when.... 4 bells rang!

"It is a lockdown, get under the tables, lock the doors and windows," shouted Juanita.
I laid my stuff on the table and went under it. I pulled the two chairs closer to me and squashed myself. It was a little bit scary and very uncomfortable. Some students were getting a bit emotional and nervous when we discovered that it was real. The class started to fidget and became very restless.

Thirty minutes later,  Mr Vasau said it was safe. We got up and made our way to the flagpole. We were told that the bad guys were in jail. Unfortunately, the weapon was not found. We were told to call the police if we came across it.

The end of day bell rang and everyone went home safely. Rowandale School is now famous in Manurewa.
